“WINTER BLUES”

“NEVERTHELESS, MORE AND MORE MEN AND WOMEN BELIEVED IN THE LORD AND WERE ADDED TO THEIR NUMBER…CROWDS GATHERED ALSO FROM TOWNS AROUND JERUSALEM, BRINGING THEIR SICK AND THOSE TORMENTED BY IMPURE SPIRITS, AND ALL OF THEM WERE HEALED.” ACTS 5: 14 & 16 NIV DO YOU EVER EXPERIENCE THE ‘WINTER BLUES’? MOST OF US HAVE AT ONE TIME OR ANOTHER. BEING INSIDE MORE WITH LESS EXPOSURE TO THE SUN AND SHORTER DAYS SEEM TO HAVE AN EFFECT UPON MOST OF US. WHILE MANY OF US TOLERATE THESE SHORTER DAYS AND A REDUCED AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT, SOME DON’T DO AS WELL. THERE IS NOW A RECOGNIZED FORM OF DEPRESSION CALLED ‘SEASONAL AFFECTIVE DISORDER’ OR SEEMINGLY APPROPRIATELY SHORTENED TO ‘SAD’. THIS FORM OF DEPRESSION IS SEEMINGLY MORE PREVALENT IN THE FAR NORTH, WITH ALMOST 10% BEING AFFECTED. INTERESTINGLY, IT IS LEAST FOUND IN THE SOUTH WITH RANGES FROM AS LOW AS 1.4% IN SUNNY FLORIDA. SOME NEED PROFESSIONAL MEDICAL CARE WHILE MOST JUST NEED A LITTLE MORE SUNSHINE. WE FIND OURSELVES DEPRESSED FOR MANY REASONS OTHER THAN JUST THE LACK OF SUNSHINE. JOB PROBLEMS, MARRIAGE PROBLEMS, PROBLEMS WITH CHILDREN, PROBLEMS WITH PARENTS, FINANCIAL DIFFICULTIES AND HEALTH CONCERNS CAN ALL GET US DOWN. THERE IS NOTHING WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH THAT OTHERS BEFORE DID NOT HAVE TO DEAL WITH AS WELL. GOD HAS GIVEN US A WONDERFUL INSTRUCTIONAL GUIDE WE CALL OUR BIBLE. WE CAN LEARN AND UNDERSTAND OUR SITUATION AND PROBLEMS, REASSURED BY KNOWING GOD IS THERE FOR US AS WE READ HIS HELPFUL STORIES IN SCRIPTURE. THE NATIONAL RETAIL FEDERATION HAS EXPECTED SALES OF SUPER BOWL FOOD, NEW TELEVISIONS, SPORTS CLOTHING AND FAN MEMORABILIA TO TOP 14 BILLION DOLLARS. NOT ENOUGH? DID YOU KNOW THE AVERAGE AD SPOT IS NOW 4.5 MILLION DOLLARS FOR ONLY A 30 SECOND SPOT.
