“JUST COMMON SENSE!”

“The words of the godly encourage many,

but fools are destroyed by their lack of common sense.”  Proverbs 10:21 NLT

Read: Proverbs 10:17-25
Just a little common sense would make our days much more tolerable.  The problem is: ‘Common sense just isn’t so common.’   Some days it is even rare.

We all make mistakes.   The biggest mistake is simply not taking the time to think things out.   We are in such a hurry to do, we forget about previewing all the possible outcomes.    Do you want more common sense?

When faced with a decision, use a little common sense…no, use a lot of common sense.   Call upon things in your past that you have learned from.  When you take leftovers from the refrigerator, smell them.   If they don’t smell good, toss them out.   If they are discolored, throw them out.   This is just common sense.  Make things in your life pass this smell and look test.  That is common sense.

When dealing with situations use common sense before acting.  In every situation, common sense starts with a prayer.   GOD knows what is good and what isn’t.  Don’t you want to have GOD on your side?   A prayer is your invitation for GOD to help you make the right decision.   There is not a more important ingredient in common sense.

An intimate prayer can make the difference between success and failure.   You need to talk with GOD.   It is only common sense.

Today’s prayer:  “LORD, YOU know more than I do.   I need your help in determining what is best for me.   More than once, I have failed in my judgment.  Help me be discerning.  Amen.”

“A CROSS EYED TEACHER?”

“Jesus replied, ‘Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.'”  John 3:3 NIV

Read:   John 3:1-21

Did you hear of a cross eyed teacher who could not control his pupils?  O.K.  It is a bad joke, but it is a great example of how we can say one thing and it is heard as something totally different.  Our English language makes it so easy to confuse the true meaning of our statements at times.

JESUS even had the problem!   Nicodemus visited JESUS late at night.   JESUS explained to him how you must be born again to enter Heaven.    John 3:4 tells us: “‘How can someone be born when they are old?’ Nicodemus asked. ‘Surely they cannot enter a second time into their mother’s womb to be born!'”

Have you accepted JESUS as your LORD AND SAVIOUR?   Truly, you must be born again to enter the gates of Heaven.   There are those in our world who will tell you (wrongly) there are many ways to enter the Kingdom of GOD.   They proclaim good works or being a good person will be your ticket to Heaven.   JESUS tells us the truth.   There is only one way to spend eternity with our TRIUNE GOD.  The only way to Heaven is to accept JESUS as your LORD AND SAVIOUR.

Don’t be confused as Nicodemus was.   You can see clearly with perfect vision.  Be born again and embrace the comfort of having your sins forgiven…forever…and spending eternity with GOD.

Today’s prayer:  “JESUS, MY LORD, I want to see all YOUR blessings clearly.  I know I must be born again to enter the gates of Heaven.  Help me to tell others of YOUR perfect love and the only way to Heaven.  Amen.”

“URGENT!”

“Entirely on their own, they urgently pleaded with us for the privilege of sharing in this service to the Lord’s people.”  2Corinthians 8:3b-4 NIV

Read 2 Corinthians 8:1-5

In bold red letters, the word “URGENT!” on the envelope proclaimed I should open the letter immediately.   The return address claimed it was from ‘Law Firm Notification’.   Knowing it must be junk mail and few things are really urgent, I opened the letter which proclaimed my warranty was about to expire on my vehicle and this was the last notice I would receive.  Junk mail it was.

Not all notices we receive are ‘urgent’.   But some are very important.   You may receive notice of a recall on a vehicle or product you purchased.   Your doctor may tell you it is urgent to perform surgery or start a medical treatment.    These are all important …but not as ‘urgent’ as one thing.

So, what is the one thing that is so urgent?   It is urgent you accept JESUS as your LORD AND SAVIOUR.   This is the one life changing experience above all else.   Things of this earth may be important, but they are not urgent.   Every letter or personal warning you may receive of things on this earth are overstated.   They will not go with you or take you into eternity.

Have you put off giving your life to CHRIST?   Do you know HE is the saviour you need today, but you have put it off?  Today is your day to accept your RISEN SAVIOUR.   Right now, go to HIM on your knees and thank HIM for forgiving all your sins.   Feel the loving arms of GOD urgently protecting you.

Today’s prayer:     “Thank YOU, JESUS for giving YOUR life so that I might live.  I urgently give my life to YOU.   Unworthy I am, yet I know YOU make me worthy.  Amen.”

“GOOOOOD MORNNNNNIIN!”

“to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.”

Acts 26:18 NIV

Read:  Acts 26: 15-18

With a bellowing voice that could be heard in the next city, everyone was greeted with more than a simple ‘Good morning’.   This gentile giant  made you feel welcome as you came up the walk to the doors of the church with his sincere southern “Goooood Mornnnnniin’!
He was a servant of GOD.   He refused positions of leadership preferring to be a server rather than in a leadership position.   Even so, he led hundreds, even thousands, to know JESUS was their SAVIOUR as well.

You and I have the same opportunities.   ‘Good morning!’ is a start…a very good start.   A conversation is easier to start with a simple greeting.  If you think it is difficult to witness to another, lay that notion aside.

Did you know the main reason someone goes to a new church?  It is because they are invited!   The opposite is also true.  The main reason someone does not go to church is because no one asked them.   The second reason someone will go to a new church is they feel overwhelmed with a situation, depressed, worried or lonely.  …..and all they need is a ‘Good morning!’ and an invitation.

Tell someone ‘Good morning!’  or ‘Good afternoon!’.   Then tell them about your church and invite them to go with you.   You may be surprised when they say ‘Yes!’.

Today’s prayer:   “LORD, Thank YOU for giving me a church family to worship YOU with.   Give me the strength to open the door for others to learn and worship YOU.   Amen.”

“MORE THAN A DOZEN ROSES!”

“Flowers appear on the earth; the season of singing has come, the cooing of doves is heard in our land.”   Song of Solomon 2:12 NIV

Read:  Song of Solomon 2:1-17

No, it is not about the quantity of roses; yet a couple of dozen probably would not hurt anything.   In fact, it is not about roses at all.

It is about doing more…much more…than bringing home or having flowers delivered.   One day a year of showing love and appreciation is hardly enough to make up for the days of forgetfulness and wrongs of an entire year.

We need to show our love and appreciation for others every day.   We can get so busy in this hectic life, we forget to do the simple things for others simply because they are the right things to do.

While the giving of roses is a usual gift from a man to a special lady, roses are far from showing the love we all need to give and receive.  Today’s reading expresses the romance of love between a woman and a man.   Did you ever notice, when reading these verses, the exchange of poetic praises starts with the lady, is answered by the man, and is closed by the lady?

GOD created us male and female for HIS reasons.   HE alone created the romance we can hold for another.  Use this day to romance the one HE has created for you.  Hold each other high and sing praises to our LORD.   It is more than a dozen roses.  And don’t forget those who are all alone today, they could use a little love and attention as well. Do yourself a favor and read Song of Solomon 2:1-17.

Today’s prayer:   “Thank YOU, LORD, for all the love YOU have given to me.  Help me to share that love with others and bring YOUR blessings on all.  Amen.”

“SKELETONS IN YOUR CLOSET?”

“‘No longer will they teach their neighbor, or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’ because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest,’ declares the Lord. ‘For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more.'”  Jeremiah 31:34 NIV

Read:  Jeremiah 31:30-34

Do you have skeletons in your closet?    You don’t have to keep those rattling bones around anymore.

So, why do you hang onto the memories of things you should have forgotten a long time ago?   There is no reason to have skeletons in your closet that only bring you haunting fears, anguish and depression.

GOD forgave those past sins long ago…if you asked HIM to forgive you with a remorseful heart.   Not only did HE forgive you, scripture tells us HE has forgotten all HE has forgiven.  GOD will not remind you again of all HE has forgiven and forgotten.

If GOD can forgive you, you can forgive yourself.   If you have forgiven yourself, then why do you still have those skeletons in your closet?   Are you concerned with others and what they may think or hold against you?

GOD forgave you.  Those who would remind or condemn you of a forgiven past are not your friends.  They can question and gossip, but you have GOD.   With the HOLY SPIRIT living inside you, you have more strength than those who condemn you.   They are allies of Satan.   Have peace in knowing you are forgiven.

If you still feel you have skeletons in your closet, ask GOD to remove them…all of them.   Tell HIM about each of those rattling bones.   GOD can turn them all into dust and HIS comforting breath will blow them all away and then HE will forget them…just as you should do.

Today’s prayer:  “LORD GOD, Thank YOU for forgiving and forgetting all my sins.   I can now forgive myself and live in peace knowing I no longer need to keep those skeletons in my closet.  Amen.”

“DON’T BE A FOOL!”

“I tell you, use worldly wealth to gain friends for yourselves, so that when it is gone, you will be welcomed into eternal dwellings.”  Luke 16:9 NIV

Read:  Luke 16:1-15

“He is no fool who gives up that which he cannot keep in order to gain that which he cannot lose.”  (Jim Elliott, Christian missionary)   I suggest you read this quote a couple of times to apply it properly.

We could re-phrase this as ‘He is a fool who holds onto things he cannot keep while losing things he could not lose in the first place.’

We are wise to give up things that we could not keep in the first place in order to gain what we can never lose.  It seems, daily, we strive to hold onto those things that are destined to slip from our grasp.  We reach with even more effort to hold what we know we were to never have.

We do this while ignoring all we can have without fear of losing it.   Does this sound familiar?   We acquire worldly possessions which we cannot take with us.   Our lives are obsessed at times with things.

JESUS offers us more than things.   HE promises us forgiveness of our sins…all of them.   When we are cleansed of our sins, HE promises us eternity in Heaven.   Are you holding onto things that will rot and decay rather than the sweet, pure eternity in Heaven that once given to you will never be taken away?

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, JESUS, for taking on all my sins so that I may spend eternity in Heaven with YOU.  Help me concentrate on holding onto this precious gift and letting go of the things of this world.  Amen.”

“IT DOES NOT TAKE COURAGE!”

“These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith-of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.”  1Peter 1:7 NIV

Read:  1Peter 1:3-9

Write this down:   “It does not take courage, it takes faith!”   Courage does not offer support or win battles; faith does. It takes faith to have courage.   Faith comes first.

Whether you are battling a war or cancer, courage is good, but faith will see you through it all.   There are three types of faith.   You can have faith in yourself, faith in someone else or faith in GOD.   The first two are better than nothing, but offer the greatest opportunity for disappointment.

Faith in GOD will never disappoint.   Never.   The only time you will be disappointed in GOD is when you abandon your faith.   GOD will never abandon you.   Never.

GOD gave us magnificent examples of men and women of great faith…Noah, Moses, Abraham, Ruth, the woman who touched the hem of JESUS’ cloak, Paul and others.   You have the ability of being as faithful as any of these great people.

The HOLY SPIRIT resides in you if you are a believer.  If you are not a believer, you have an opportunity right now to accept JESUS as your SAVIOUR and have all the faith you will ever need.

Look at what you just wrote down.  “It does not take courage, it takes faith!”

Today’s prayer:  “LORD GOD, Thank YOU for giving me YOUR SON and the HOLY SPIRIT to live in me.   I accept the miraculous faith that comes from YOU.  Help me to be totally dependent upon that faith today and always.  Amen.”
