“A VERY SPECIFIC PRAYER!” Sunday Sermonette

” And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words.”  Matthew 6:7 NIV

Read:  Matthew 6:5-15

You have heard the old adage; ‘Be careful of what you pray for.’   This may be very true.  But, allow me to share with you something even more true.   Be careful of how you pray.

We often pray for things that are like a buffet of multiple answers.   If you have a problem or a situation, do you pray asking GOD:  “Please tell me what to do”?

Do you really expect GOD to send you a page by page instruction book of all HE wants you to do to solve your situation?   Or do you expect HIM to send you a simple to follow list of one or two steps?   GOD does not complicate HIS answers.  We do.

How about using the brain GOD gave you guided by HIS HOLY SPIRIT inside you to come up with the very best solution.  A very specific prayer can be answered with a very specific answer.  A very specific answer is simple and easy to understand.  A well worded prayer can be answered by GOD with a simple yes or no.

General prayers usually get general answers.   Very specific prayers get very specific answers.  In order to hear GOD’S answer to your prayer, you have to listen.   And always…always…start your prayer with thanking GOD.

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, LORD MY GOD, for listening to my jumbled prayers.   Help me be specific in expressing my needs and wants.   I will listen carefully for YOUR perfect answers.  Amen.”

“JUST WAIT A MINUTE!” Wednesday Minute

” Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves”  Matthew 7:15 NIV

Read:   Matthew 7:15-23

When was the last time you told someone “Just wait a minute!”?   If you have not said it, there is a good chance you thought it.   With bogus unsolicited phone calls coming in at all hours claiming to have information on your credit card account to someone wanting a donation for a fake law enforcement charity, it doesn’t seem to stop.

Maybe, you were buying a new appliance and the sales rep was insisting you buy their overpriced warranty or pay extra for their express delivery when you had to stop them with “Just wait a minute”.

False doctrine is like that.   Have you ever questioned what someone was spouting about their interpretation of scripture or insisting you believe something that you knew was wrong?   If you question false teachings, you have discernment.    Discernment needs to be practiced every day.

The evil one masquerades as prophets and teachers declaring GOD’S WORD with a twist…a twist that ultimately contradicts GOD’S true WORD. JESUS warned us of these things and of these false prophets and teachers.   Satan has no doctrine.  He steals the truth of GOD’S WORD to gain credibility and then professes his deceitful lies.   That is when you need to say:  “Just wait a minute!”

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, LORD, for warning me of the false prophets and false doctrine that is all around us.   I need YOUR discernment.  I know YOUR WORD, will obey YOUR discipline and will trust as YOU guide.  Amen.”

“HEAVEN CANNOT BE!” Sunday Sermonette

Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”  James 1:17 NIV

Read:   Read James 1:12-25

Heaven.  Perfection.   Since we have never known perfection it is more than difficult for us to comprehend what GOD has in store for us.   We can create images of Heaven based upon what we learn from scriptures, but even in our most educated minds, we fall short in imagining the wonders of Heaven.

As we struggle in this sin impacted world, how could we possibly understand the grace and peace GOD has prepared for us in Heaven?   Living with sin around us, it is easy to be calloused and confused.  But, GOD has a better plan.

GOD lives in perfection…total perfection.  That is all we need to understand.  If we can accept GOD living in perfection, we can more easily understand the perfection of Heaven.  Understand, GOD is perfect and cannot be in a place less than perfect.   We will simply find perfection where GOD lives.

There is no sin in Heaven.  None.  Zero. Nada.   The problems we have on this earth  will be left here.   There will be no concerns, problems, bad health, fears, insecurities in Heaven.   There will be no memories of the bad things we have experienced on earth.   As much as we may feel that Heaven is too good to be true, Heaven is both real and true.

GOD has perfection in store for you…accept HIS invitation to live in perfection by accepting JESUS as your SAVIOUR today.

Today’s prayer:  “LORD GOD, Thank YOU for being perfect and offering Heaven’s perfection to me.   Although, I am unworthy; I accept YOUR SON as my SAVIOUR.  Amen.”

“SOMEBODY, DO SOMETHING!” Wednesday Minute

” Afterward Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, ‘This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: “Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.”  Exodus 5:1 NIV

Read:   Exodus 5

I read of a car overturning and trapping the occupants inside.   With super strength four college students were able to push the car  upright and pulled the passengers to safety.   The heroes did not wait for a rescue team; they decided to be the rescue team!  They did something.

People who are successful at any task are the one who do something.  In order to succeed, you have to do something.   While you may be able to accomplish something by hanging onto the coattails of others as they lead the parade, you will never be an individual success until you step up and do things on your own.

We all have heard of someone who failed and failed and failed; then they were a huge success.    You can be a huge success.   Just do something.   You can be that somebody who succeeds.   Maybe, you are challenged by a special project, a difficult class in school or a personal problem at home.   No matter the situation, you can rise above it.   Just start doing instead of thinking about it and putting it off.

Moses life led him to be an outcast at times with his people and with the Egyptians, but he prevailed.   He struggled to be obedient to GOD when GOD called upon him and he led GOD’S people for 40 years.

Today, you can allow GOD to use you.   Follow GOD rather than your old self.   As I write often…”If you want the same old thing, do the same old thing.   If you want something different, do something different”.  Don’t wait to hear “Somebody, do something!”.    Do something because you are supposed to do something.

Today’s prayer:  “LORD, Hear my prayer.   Thank YOU for all YOU have done for me.   Prod me to do all YOU want me to do for YOU when I hold back.   Amen. ”

“WHAT IS A TRINITARIAN?” Sunday Sermonette

” Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba,  Father.”  Galatians 4:6 NIV

Read:   Galatians 4:1-20

Trinitarian is a word not commonly used in our everyday conversation, but maybe it should be.   Are you a Trinitarian?   I hope so.

A Trinitarian is a believer that GOD is the TRINITY.    GOD is the FATHER CREATOR, JESUS THE SON, and THE HOLY SPIRIT.  If you believe GOD in these three PERSONS, you are a Trinitarian.

A Trinitarian is anyone who believes in the HOLY TRINITY.    Your belief is strong, so strong that you know without any doubt that our GOD is the GOD of THREE PERSONS.   GOD explains to us in the opening verses of our Bibles of being the CREATOR, of JESUS being the WORD OF GOD, and of the SPIRIT OF GOD hovering above the earth.

In the old testament, GOD told us he is “I AM.”   JESUS told us in our New Testament that HE is “I AM.” and HE told us of the HOLY SPIRIT OF GOD coming to reside in all believers.   We have the singleness of GOD in three PERSONS of the TRINITY.

False religions do not have a god who is the CREATOR, THE REMOVER OF SIN AND THE SPIRIT OF GOD dwelling inside each believer.   You have our GOD OF THREE PERSONS.   This makes you a Trinitarian.

While it is important to know who we are, it is equally important to share who we are.   Tell someone today who you are and about your TRIUNE GOD.

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, GOD, for creating me, saving me from my sin and living within me as my GUIDE, COUNSELOR and PROTECTOR.   Give me the words to share YOUR message with those who most need to hear.  Amen.”

“MAKE THE WORLD GO AWAY!” Wednesday Minute

“Give your burdens to the Lord, and he will take care of you.  He will not permit the godly to slip and fall.”  Psalm 55:22 NLT

Read:   Psalm 55:22-23

We have all had those bad, trying times when it seemed everything was crashing in on us.   Fifty years ago there was a song’s lyrics that proclaimed:  “Make the world go away, take it off my shoulders.”

You may have felt the weight of burdens that felt like the weight of the world.  You may have felt so much pressure you even screamed:  “Make the world go away!”   Some mornings you just pulled the sheet up to block out the day hoping the world would just go away.

Often, it is hard to face the reality of problems.   It would be so much easier if we could just escape the painful situations and they would go away.

GOD gave us an escape in two forms.   First, HE gave us HIS strength.  We do not have to rely upon our own weaknesses to support on our shoulder what may seem to be the weight of the world.  HE has enough strength for everyone in the world.

Second, HE gave us time with HIM to hand HIM our problems with simple prayers.  All you have to do is pray.   Ask GOD to take your problems and get them off your shoulder.   When you do, the problems of this world will go away. The burdens you fear are never to big for GOD.

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, LORD, for taking away the burdens and fears that weigh me down.  Thank YOU for hearing my pleas and giving me YOUR strength to endure.  Amen.”

“MONEY IS LIKE MANURE!” Sunday Sermonette

” Didn’t it belong to you before it was sold? And after it was sold, wasn’t the money at your disposal? What made you think of doing such a thing? You have not lied just to human beings but to God.”   Acts 5:4 NIV

Read:   Acts 5:1-11

Think about it.  Money is just like manure.  If you spread manure around, it makes things grow.  But, you don’t want to step in it.  Manure is a great fertilizer for plants and money is a great aid to help others.

Pile manure up and it rots and stinks.  Money piled up and hoarded will rot and eventually stink.  Money used wrongly will rot our very soul and we will stink just like the manure.  But, money spread around will benefit many.

Today’s verses tell us of hoarding money…even part of it…can be evil and a lie unto GOD.   The lesson is hard, but true.   What we are to give and share is meant by GOD for HIS purpose and we are not to hold back in our giving.

Whether you are rich beyond measure or have only pennies, it is all GOD’S which HE has allowed you to use while you are on this earth.   All GOD asks is you return a portion of it to HIM.

Hebrews 13:5 tells us: “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”  What does this verse mean to you?

Money is like manure.  Spread it around and it does the most good.   Are you giving back to GOD what is already HIS?

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, GOD, for all you have given to me.  I am reminded that all I have is all that has come from YOU.   Guide me in spreading all I have, little or abundantly to do the most good for YOUR purpose.  Amen.”

“LAND OF THE FREE?” Wednesday Minute

” therefore you will no longer see false visions or practice divination. I will save my people from your hands. And then you will know that I am the Lord.”  Ezekiel 13:23

Read:   Ezekiel 13:17-23

While preparing the celebration of another 4th of July, are we into celebrating the celebration or sincerely appreciating this historical day?

How great is our country when our moral standards are being poured down the gutter?   As a child, I stood proudly every morning in school pledging allegiance to the United States of America facing our flag.   Today, most kids don’t even know all the words of the ‘Pledge of Allegiance’.

Sexual perversion and living together outside of marriage is promoted openly in TV, movies and even commercials. Vulgarity in speech and actions is a norm almost anyplace people gather.  Disrespect of our police and military is at an all time high.

Mention GOD and you may be looked at as a dinosaur.   But, that is what we are to do.   Scripture tells us of the many times GOD’S children abandoned HIM, just as we are doing today.  Finally, HE sent HIS only SON to take on all those sins and to give those who trusted and believed a new life for all eternity.

Isn’t it time you traded the evils of this world for the safety of JESUS’ arms?   Only JESUS can offer you the land of the free…free from the grips of Satan.

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, LORD, for giving me the only true freedom.  Help me today to share YOUR gospel with others and turn the values of this country around.   Amen.”

“SOMEONE, ANSWER THE DOOR!” Sunday Sermonette

” Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”  Revelation 3:20 NIV

Read:   Revelation 3:19-22

As we walked door to door to invite neighbors to visit the new church in Boerne, sometimes it was a long wait at the door before someone would open it.   Once, I heard the mother yell through the house:   “Someone, answer the door!”

We are often like that.   We just don’t open the door when JESUS is knocking.   Still HE knocks again and again.   Sometimes we think we are just to busy and other times we don’t even hear HIM.  In order to hear, we first have to listen.

JESUS could just come on in.   But, HE waits.   The choice of accepting JESUS is each of ours, individually.  Have you answered the door to your heart when JESUS is knocking?   HE is offering HIMSELF to each and every person.   It is your choice.

HE may knock loudly or HIS knock may be as gentle as a whisper.  Anyway HE knocks, there will be no doubt.   JESUS is there for you.  If you will open the door, JESUS will come in.   No matter what you have done, said or thought, there is a new day.  Today can be your day.

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, JESUS, for not stopping YOUR knocking on my heart.   I hear YOU and want to know YOU.   Now, I am answering YOUR call.  Amen.”
