“IF YOUR NAME IS NOT GOD . . . ” Wednesday Minute

“Watch out for false prophets. They come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ferocious wolves.”  Matthew 7:15 NIV

Read:   Matthew 7:15-23

If your name is not GOD or your actions and words are not from HIS grace, then all you do or say are nothing but clanging symbols and do not matter.  Thoughts, actions and words that are taken from this evil world are deceptive inputs from Satan.

Only by reading and studying GOD’S word can you grow in righteousness.   There is no righteousness in the taunts, suggestions or direct instructions of this world.   You may be listening to a very smart and well educated person, but they may have no wisdom.   They may be totally ignorant in knowing GOD and all HE has for you.  Without wisdom from GOD…GOD alone…avoid all you see and hear from these misguided people.

Be careful of those you who offer directions.   They may know how to bake a cake, build a house or fix your car.  But, they may not know JESUS as their LORD and SAVIOUR or are not strong in their faith.  If their name is not GOD or their words and actions are not from HIM, then pay no heed to their advice.  There are a lot of ‘nice’ people who do not know GOD.  If they do not know GOD, even without their understanding or knowledge, they are on Satan’s payroll.

But, not all is lost.  These are the people JESUS told you to tell about HIM.   These are those who are lost and need to know the power of GOD.  You are not GOD, but your words and actions can be from GOD’S grace.  HE has given you HIS strength to tell the world about HIS love and to warn others of the deception of this world.

GOD’S name is GOD.  There is only one GOD.

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, LORD, for being GOD and for protecting me from those who would lead me astray.  Help me identify and beware of those false prophets.   Amen.”

“YOU DON’T LIKE JEWS?” Sunday Sermonette

“Above his head they placed the written charge against him: this is JESUS, the king of the Jews.”  Matthew 27:37 NIV

Read:   Matthew 1:1-17

Why not?   Why do we like or dislike people because of their race, origin or religion?   This is one situation that you can ‘initially’ blame someone else.   Maybe, you learned it from your family, or were exposed to a bias in school or your neighborhood.

But, it stops there.   You learned to dislike or hate from someone else, but it does not mean you have to continue it.   So, why do you not like Jews?   All Jews or just some Jews?  Are you getting the point?  Not liking Jews is like saying you don’t like a person because they have red hair or they are not tall enough or because they came from a certain city.

That is what happened two thousand years ago.   CHRIST was a Jew but HE came from a poor little city and those in authority looked down on HIM because of where HE was born.  Today, we would say ‘HE came from the wrong side of the tracks’.

Still not liking Jews?   Did you know the Bible you read and study GOD’S word from was written, except for one author, by Jews.   Each and every chapter in the Old Testament and the New Testament, lacking one, was written by a Jew.  Do you not like Moses, David, Isaiah, Matthew, Peter or Paul?   How about JESUS himself, the greatest Jew of all time.

Like the man said…think about it.   Jews….GOD’S chosen people and as Christians we have been given the gift from JESUS to join HIS chosen people.

Today’s prayer:  “JESUS, Thank YOU for putting up with my bias and selfish nature.  Please forgive me.   Help me to look at the person, accept Jews and others and share YOUR gospel with them.   Amen.”

“I AM ONE SCARED SINNER!” Wednesday Minute

“All people will fear; they will proclaim the works of God and ponder what he has done.”

Read:   Psalm 64:1-19

I am one scared sinner.   I fear for those who don’t know JESUS as their saviour.   Are you?   It can be said; ‘an evangelist is one scared sinner telling another scared sinner of the safety in JESUS’ arms’.   You can be an evangelist too.

We all should be scared of the evil in this world that seems to be growing at an alarming rate.  We are responsible for those whom GOD created and to give them the hope and safety that can only come from JESUS.

Being scared of thieves,  terrorists, pornography, child abuse, murderers, drugs and more is not to be scared and run away to hide, but to be scared enough to be aware and do all we can against them.  While you can take on efforts against these things (and you should), the most important thing you can do is tell others about being scared and finding safety in the loving arms of JESUS.

Are you scared enough to run and hide?   Well, that is not scared enough!  We need to be so scared of the evils in this world we do something about it.   Again, the most important thing you can do is to tell everyone you come in contact with the safety from evil in our daily lives with security in the loving arms of JESUS.

Are you one scared sinner who is brave enough to comfort another scared sinner?   If you are not scared enough, get scared!  It is time to share the gospel of JESUS!

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, LORD, for the fear in my heart of all the wrongs in this world.  Forgive me for doing evil against YOU.  Help me to know I am a sinner scared enough to help others.  Amen.”

“DO THEY CALL YOU NAMES?” Sunday Sermonette

“When you did these things and I kept silent, you thought I was exactly like you.  But I now arraign you and set my accusations before you.”   Psalm 50:21 NIV

Read:   Psalm 50:16-23

When you were a kid, you probably were called a name you did not like.  Kids can be cruel.  But, it is not just kids.  Do you have friends who call you names or use critical terms to insult you because you won’t join them in doing things that go against your conscience?  You don’t laugh at their inappropriate off color jokes or you won’t go to their parties that are just an excuse to drink.

Your so called friends are more concerned with you fitting in to their ideals than respecting your faith and moral code.

There were times in my teens when I was more concerned with doing whatever was necessary to win the approval of my peers than winning any accolades from my GOD.  Perhaps, there was a time in your life when you were more concerned with the names or labels being put on you than the more important name GOD gave you…’my child’.

Are you more afraid of being called a prude, a stick-in-the-mud, no fun or too religious than being called by GOD faithful, true, honorable or obedient?  There is no need to feel alone or cast out by those who really don’t care about you or your walk with GOD.  GOD is there to reward you for your love of HIM.

Others may abandon their peer pressure ways when they see the peace and joy you have in your RISEN SAVIOUR.  Tell them about Jesus.

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, GOD, for giving me YOUR special name for me.   Help me resist the names I am called and the pressures from others to abandon YOUR will for me.   Amen.”

“DO YOU READ HOROSCOPES?” Wednesday Minute

“Do not turn to mediums or seek out spiritists, for you will be defiled by them. I am the Lord your God.”  Leviticus 19:31 NIV

“At that time I will put you on trial. I am eager to witness against all sorcerers and adulterers and liars.”   Malachi 3:5a NIV

Stop anyone on the street and ask them ‘what’s your sign?’   You will likely hear; Pisces, Taurus, Libra or one of the other astrological signs.   Seldom, you may hear; “I don’t believe in astrology.”   I hope that would be your answer. That should be the only correct answer.   Even admitting to a sign or reading a horoscope and you are already on a slippery slope.

Yet many, including some claiming to be Christians, will read horoscopes in hopes of something good.  Some believe that one ‘sign’ is better equipped, cannot be trusted, will be wealthy or some other nonsense.   They believe horoscopes forecast good luck, bad luck, false warnings or good fortune.  But all are nothing but Satan’s lies.

Some will tell you they believe in horoscopes and fortune telling, while others claim it is all in fun and profess it to be innocent.   There is nothing innocent about Satan.   Things that might seem innocent and that GOD has warned us of are things we should totally avoid.   Satan creates footholds in little things.

Deuteronomy 4:19 warns us; “And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars-all the heavenly array-do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the Lord your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven.”

Then in Micah 5:12 GOD tells us; “I will put an end to all witchcraft, and there will be no more fortune-tellers.”

We are to worship GOD only and trust in GOD only.   There is no security or entertainment in partaking of anything that is of Satan.

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, LORD, for protecting me from the evils of Satan in this world.   Help me to warn others of these false hopes and Satan’s lies.  Amen.”

“IT’S NOT I’M RIGHT, IT’S THEY’RE WRONG!” Sunday Sermonette

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.  Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.”

Proverbs 3: 5-7 NIV

Do you try to excuse your insistence of claiming you are right when you know how wrong you really are?   Some may take command by simply changing the subject or offering excuses and false information in order to attempt to be right.  Are you in a fatal attempt to convince yourself that you are right rather than self admit to being wrong?

When we assert we are right while knowing we are wrong, we hurt others and are hurting ourselves.  Even if you feel others are wrong when they don’t agree, it does not make you right.  No matter how much we want to be right, there are times when someone is right and we need to concede.

GOD loves us.   HE gave us HIS Ten Commandments of rights and wrongs.   HIS scriptures give us real examples of how others have succeeded and failed.   These are instructional if we submit to learning from these examples.   Still, we choose to do things our way…right or wrong.

Just because you have always done something a certain way does not make you right.   Besides the commandments GOD has given us, we need to listen to HIM in special circumstances.  There are times HE may tell us to do things differently than before.   HE told Moses to pray over the rock the second time after telling him to strike the rock for water decades before.   We need to listen to GOD in each individual situation.   GOD knows best.   GOD does not change HIS mind, HE wants us to change our minds and listen to HIM.

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, LORD, for reminding me that only YOU are always right.   I need YOUR guidance and correction daily.  Help me to be open to others being right and me being wrong.  Amen.”

“ROLLER COASTER ANDY!” Wednesday Minute

“All their days their work is grief and pain; even at night their minds do not rest. This too is meaningless.”   Ecclesiastes 2:23

Read:  Ecclesiastes 2:17-26

Years ago, we went to a theme park with another family.   The dad, Andy, was a big, robust man.  Except for one thing.  He had a fear of roller coasters.   After a lot of coaxing, he climbed in.  Scared for his life he clenched the bar and was frozen in time.   The attendant had to pull his white knuckles off the safety bar to lock it in position.

Soon the coaster was screaming down the track, but not as loud as Andy was screaming!  Then it was over.  Andy kept looking back at the coaster as we walked away.  Then he was on a new high.  Within an hour, he was ready to ride that roller coaster again.

We are a lot like that.   Once we get on the roller coaster of life, we feel like we have to ride out the highs and lows.   One minute, we feel we are on top of the world, then we are whirled into depressions, fears, times of doubt and insecurities.

Is your life on a wild roller coaster ride?   Get off the scary highs and lows and trade them for a level ride on an eight lane, peaceful, scenic super highway.   It is easier than you think.   Today, make a decision not to climb on the highs and lows of that roller coaster.   Today does not have to be a roller coaster day.

Today, you can have the peace and serenity of JESUS.   You can leave all the ‘what is going to happen next’ times at the foot of HIS cross.   You no longer have to fear the unknowns.  You no longer have to those white knuckle worries.   Today can be the day you listen to the SPIRIT OF GOD for direction.   Today, you can have the peace of all GOD has for you.

You can decide to hold HIS hand today or to once again climb on the roller coaster of fear.   It is your choice.   Try to tame that roller coaster of life or give it all to GOD and take that breath of relief.

Today’s prayer:  “JESUS, LORD, Thank YOU for keeping me off the highs and lows of life.   I want the steadiness of YOUR care and the security of YOUR loving arms.  Amen.”

“IT MAKES YOU STUPID!” Sunday Sermonette

“Even as fools walk along the road, they lack sense and show everyone how stupid they are.”  Ecclesiastes 10:3 NIV

Read:   Ecclesiastes 10:1-15

Have you ever done something that you knew was wrong, yet you charged ahead and did it anyway?   A lady recently told a story of a 25 year wonderful marriage when her husband suddenly died.   She was lost.   Immediately, she began looking for a new husband.   She married and divorced within months.   She says the loneliness made her stupid.

In this twisted world, we can blame loneliness, anger, depression, anxiety, others and more for making us feel stupid.   But, in truth, we need very little help and can do things that make us feel pretty stupid on our own.    When was the last time you did something that resulted in you feeling stupid?  Maybe not that long ago…  After all, you knew better.

Doing things that makes us feel stupid is more common to some than others.   We all make choices.   We make good choices and we make bad choices.   When we are self reliant, depending upon our own judgment we can make decisions that make us feel stupid.   Perhaps, feeling really stupid is our own wake-up call.

GOD doesn’t make you feel stupid.   We can feel really stupid on our own.  GOD can be your strength.   HE can be your good conscience.  HE can guide you to good decisions.   When you take all your problems to HIM and listen to HIM you will not have to look back and feel stupid for the decisions you made alone.

Give GOD a chance.  It is the only time you have an absolute guarantee for not feeling stupid.

Today’s prayer:  “Thank YOU, LORD, for giving me solid footing in all I do by YOUR grace.   Guide me to be less dependent on my own failed judgment and more dependent upon YOU.  Amen.”
